Jerusalem - Why is it always at the centre of world news?
The answer is that God had chosen Israel and its capital Jerusalem as the focus of His purpose with the nations of the world. God promised the land, extending from Egypt to Syria, to Abraham, the father of the Jewish people:
"The Lord made a covenant with Abram, saying, Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the Great river, the river Euphrates" (Genesis 15:18)
God chose Jerusalem, or Zion as it is sometimes called, as the geographical centre of His witness to the nations:
"For the Lord hath chosen Zion; he hath desired it for his habitation. This is my rest for ever: here will I dwell, for I have desired it." (Psalm 132:13,14)
"Thus saith the Lord God; This is Jerusalem: I have set it in the midst of the nations and countries that are round about her" (Ezekiel 5:5)
Israel has always had enemies seeking to destroy her:
"Thine enemies have said, Come, and let us cut them off from being a nation; that the name of Israel may be no more in remembrance" (Psalm 83:4)
This is still the situation today. Among the Palestinians there are extremist groups that are intent on destroying Israel. They are supported by fanatical Muslim terrorist organisations and some Arab governments. The events of 9/11 confirm the view that these groups view the West as supporting the nation of Israel. These enemies will continue, in the forlorn hope that Jerusalem will be the capital of a Palestinian State - Jerusalem will always be in the news.
Soon, the Bible tells us,these enemies will attack Jerusalem. God will then intervene and He will send Jesus back to the Mount of Olives (see Acts1:11). There will be a gigantic earthquake, destroying the city. Jesus will become king of Israel and the whole world.
"For I will gather all nations against Jerusalem to battle... Then shall the Lord go forth , and fight against those nations... And his feet shall stand in that day upon the mount of Olives, which is before Jerusalem on the east... The Lord shall be king over all the earth" (Zechariah 14:2-9)
Jerusalem will be rebuilt and will flourish as the capital of the Kingdom of God on the earth.
"Beautiful for situation, the joy of the whole earth, is mount Zion ... the city of the great king" (Psalm 48:2)
